Trans Tasman Challenge News 2009 WOW.... What a great event on the 6th 7th 8th of June. The Trans Tasman Challenge was a complete success with 24 competitive boats competing for their nation. The weather turned for the better the day before the event started, with 5 knots of off shore wind and blue skys. We had some really low tides to work to our favour as there was bad beach errosion. Running starts and beach finishes were eliminated because of the beach condition. On the Saturday the waves were rolling through a 3ft face wave which was dumping on top of the shallow bank which made boats hesitate when heading out through the break. The 'M' can was in place and made it possible to win or lose a race with these extra turns. The commintator was having a field day as the racing was really close and boats were overtaking each other on just about on every corner. Black Pepper boat from NZ won the flipper award on the Saturday for flipping 3 times in one day. The Sunday surf X was even faster racing with the swell dropping with the tide but tricky conditions around 'A' and 'D' can where the rips were, it was really choppy and hard to judge. Boats still managed to roll over with the flipper award going to Head Case from the Aussie team flipping around 'E' can by himself, then hoping on top of his boat claiming his flip. There was lots of cheers from both teams on the beach when there side were victorious in each race. Great atmosphere on the beach. The presintations were held back at the Southport SLSC and also Fishermans Wharf Tavern throughout the weekend. The Monday was the long haul with 24 boat lined up ready to race at once. This was a thrilling event with no prop guards on and the conditions were almost perfect. The flag droped and 24 boats headed for the first turn can. This was alot of fun. We had a helicopter flying around the boats taking video footage and photos of the boats in full flight. The Aussies came in first and second place in the long haul. This was the biggest event that Thundercats has seen for some time in Australia and will now be a annuall event. Both teams are really happy with the rules and regulations and the sport will continue to grow. This has been some of the best racing i have ever seen and been involved and is great to see the Aussie team do so well. To view and purchase some photos of the weekend click here. More photos will be added shortly in the gallery. A big THANKYOU goes to:- Aussie team Captain:- Chris Thirkettle NZ Trans Tasman organiser:- Steve Frogley NZ team captain:- Tony Vercauteren RD :- Gary Morrisson, Rob Thomas, Wal Dobrow, John Kerrisk Score Girls from NZ team Scruitneer Boats: - NZ Dave, Aus Mick Shirts jackets and polos for Aus team: Renee Tesoriero 4WD ute for all the gear and boats up and down the beach:- Ryan Jermolenko Safety boats:- Brissy team- joey, chris, tony, dazza, thomas and fat boy Welder:- Marty Brettell Beach officials:- Matt fallon, Aaron robinson, Tim Grinter, Tim Underwood, douglas, Fanning brothers Sponsors:- Fishermans Wharf Tavern Southport SLSC Miami Shade and Sails Thanks everyone for making this event happen........................... |

Qld Titles Round 2-3 Ballina What a great weekend with a 5knot off shore breese and some sets max at 3-3.5ft. This was perfect racing conditions for the surf X on Saturday. We had a total of 12 boats racing with 7 A grade and 5 B grade boats. We kicked off at 10am and got into some fast action racing and it didnt back off the throttle as that small breeze held the nose down when punching through the waves. B Grade kick off with 2 flips in the first race- Canapult and rocket man showing us there roll over proceedure on there outboards. Canapult won the flipper award for cork screwing on D can. WELL DONE. The B Graders Showed some good driving and some speed is starting to show. I took till race 5 for Hammer Time {the only A grader} to flip punching out through a set wave. Then the next wave fliped it back over. Lucky Lucky. Fat Cat was in full throttle mode as there was no backing off over any of the waves. TTTC and Duck Nuts were all over his tail and never let a bad move go by. Congratulations goes to FAT CAT for winning the day, Ducks Nuts second, and TTTC Third. Head Case Snaped there steering and was out in the first race and for the rest of the day. Unlucky. Congratulation goes to H2Go Racing for staying upright for a whole race day. On the Sunday we raced the 90km long haul event. The condtitions were average with a 2m swell rolling and a 15knot SE breeze. There were some testing conditions and prop choice was hard as some areas were smooth and some were rough. Congratulations to FAT CAT won the Long Haul event, Duck Nuts second and H2GO Third. Big thanks:- Goes to the score girls for helping out {Mel,Jen and Kirra} officials who help with the event. Aaron the RD got 6 stiches when he kicked a prop guard. Be careful mate. RJ towing all the boats and club trailer up and down the beach. Ballina Coast Guard for help with safety on the 3 jet skis and the jets boat for the 2 days. ELECTIONS FOR THE POSITIONS OF BRANCH CHAIRMAN & BRANCH SECRETARY Due to personal reasons I have resigned from the position of Branch Chairman. I would like to take this opportunity to ask for interested members to nominate for the positions of Chairman and Secretary. These positions will be decided by vote at the next General Meeting to be held at the Victoria Point Tavern, Colburn Avenue, Victoria Point at 6.30pm on Tuesday, 14th April 2009. This is your opportunity to have a say, so please come along and vote for your new committee. I would like to thank all those who assisted in the creation of this Branch approximately two years ago. It was tough getting it up and running but we got there in the end, so thanks for all your help. I will still be involved and will no doubt see you all on the beach. Regards The Fox |

After our Race Director spoke with the Life Guard appointed by the Council on Saturday afternoon who advised against racing due to the lack of beach, we were left with no decision but to cancel the event. We apologise for those of you who made arrangements in advance, but unfortunately we cannot go against their call. Clause 5 of the Conditions of Racing provided by the Gold Coast City Council states "You are required to abide by any direction issued by the Lifeguard Superintendent for the area". Our decision is not made lightly and if could be avoided, would be. If you look on the surf cam pics taken during the morning you will see there was no way we could have held an event in these conditions ie. no beach. We leave our decision until Saturday afternoon to make a call. Sometimes conditions can change where winds are not pushing water further up the beach but yesterday wasn't the case. We don't have a crystal ball. It is unfortunate, but we'll attempt to obtain a permit to replace this event. You may suggest that "don't ask the lifeguard" but at the end of the day, ignorance is not an excuse. http://www.coastalwatch.com/camera/cameras_large.aspx?cam=1125&state=QLD&t=1:27:21%20PM&camName=Seaworld John Kerrisk |
